Positive and enduring place-making is important to all of us. If, as Sir Patrick Geddes asserted, ‘a city is more than a place in space …. it is a drama in time’, then we need to appreciate that urbanism is more than design and buildings, and create a long-term template to nurture and interact with the drama.

Learning from Place is the first in a series of publications put together by The Academy of Urbanism, which aims to promote the lessons that have to be learned about good urbanism and best practice and to build a body of evidence arising primarily from the annual Awards process, enabling the Academy to set out what constitutes a great city, town, neighbourhood, street and place.
